excerpt:
The purpose of meditation is to bring about the calmness, the tranquility, stability, quietness, and clarity of mind, to stimulate mindfulness and rouse it into action leading to the penetration into the inner world, in which lies the secret of life. It is a path par excellence which leads him or her to the gradual purification of thought, deed, and speech and ultimately to his or her goal of insight, enlightenment, and perfection.
In order to help accelerate and stimulate his or her activity and clear his or her path, it is necessary for him or her to begin their meditation by observing a few self-disciplines, at least for the duration of the practice of meditation.
They are as follows:
1. To abstain from taking life in any shape or form, large or small (killing).
2. To abstain from taking things belonging to the others, which are not clearly given to him or her (stealing or robbing).
3. To abstain from any sexual activity during the course.
4. To abstain from speaking untruths.
5. To abstain from taking intoxicants, including all kinds of liquor and drugs.
Students are reminded to always keep in mind that (1) a clean body in clean dress, and (2) a clean mind in a clean body, are the necessary prerequisites needed for the attainment of one’s own purity, and that is what Vipassana is aiming at.
At the beginning and the end of the course, according to Buddhist Tradition a short service consisting of the sharing of merit gained out of good deeds with, and the sending of good will and good wishes, loving kindness and compassion to all beings big and small, known and unknown, friends and foes alike, are to be observed daily during the course.
Thank you for your cooperation.
